17th-century German philosopher Gottfried Leibniz proposed that a monad is the simple, immaterial substance that make up the entire universe. Ancient mathematical philosophers, particularly those influenced by Neopythagoreanism, furthered the concept of a monad goes beyond a simple, indivisible unit, not just as the smallest part of a thing, but as the origin and source of all things. It's the ultimate reality from which all else emanates. It's the perfect, singular "One", referring monad as The First, The Seed, The Essence, The Builder, and the Foundation, and also called "Unity".
